Prep Students

Preparing to "Strive for Success" in Prep

At Sandy Strait we believe it is important to provide our students with the best possible start to their first year of schooling.  This year we are continuing with our Pre-Prep Program to assist our children and parents to best prepare for the curriculum and learning expectations of the upcoming Prep Year. These sessions are an opportunity for you and your child to get to know our school and the wonderful work our teachers and students do.  Please feel free to come to the sessions we are offering, to secure your place at Sandy Strait.

Purpose of the Program:

  • To provide an orientation and skill based program to help prepare our future students for the Prep Curriculum in the year ahead.
  • To model and provide activities and ideas for parents to work on with their children at home to ensure that they have the best opportunity to succeed in the Prep Year.
  • To  foster and build relationships  between teachers, students and parents prior to the commencement of the school year.
  • To provide opportunities for our future Prep students to interact with one another and build relationships prior to commencing school.

Program Structure:

  • The program will be conducted over 4 separate 1 hour sessions throughout Terms 3 and 4.
  • Children and parents attend the sessions.
  • At the end of the Numeracy and Literacy sessions parents will be provided with a pack of activities to take home to use with their child between sessions. Each of the activities contained within the pack will have been modelled throughout the morning session. A different activity pack will be distributed at each of the sessions.
  • Each session will have a particular teaching focus (incorporating oral language) with activities and games developing the following:
    • Session 1: Come and Try Day – to familiarise students with the Prep environment.
    • Session 2: Oral Language and the Learning of Sounds – the importance of oral language and sounds in reading/writing/spelling.
    • Session 3: Numeracy  what Numeracy looks like and the materials students use.
    • Session 4: Social Skills – taking turns, introduction to You Can Do it school readiness.
  • At the conclusion of the Pre-Prep Program will be individual interviews to discuss your child's needs.
Starting school is such an exciting time for both children and parents and we are looking forward to working together with you and your child throughout the Sandy Strait Pre-Prep Program. We look forward to having you "strive for success" with us at Sandy Strait.

Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they start Prep. To determine when your child can commence their prep year, use the prep ready reckoner calculator External link.

The Prep Year is perhaps one of the most important years of schooling.  It is in this year that a child’s foundation for success is laid by developing:

  • a positive approach to learning

  • independence and confidence

  • thinking and problem solving skills

  • language skills

  • early literacy and numeracy

  • physical abilities, including gross and fine motor skills

Our staff are qualified Early Childhood Teachers who are supported by trained teacher aides with a wide range of specialised skills to ensure that they are an important part of our classrooms.

We look forward to the opportunity of forming a partnership with you and your child.

Preparing for Prep

Each year early in Term 3, our future Prep students and their families are invited to a Prep Open Day in which children can come along, participate in classroom activities, familiarise themselves with the Prep classrooms, meet our friendly staff and make new friends.

Throughout Term 3 and Term 4 in the lead up to Prep parents and students are encouraged to participate in our Pre Prep Program. This program consists of a variety of classroom sessions each focussed on developing skills in specific areas. See below for information on our Pre Prep Program.

To complete the enrolment and transition process 1-1 parent teacher interviews are then conducted to gather further information about your child to ensure that they have the best possible start to their schooling journey.
